Circular
Polarizing Filters
Circular
polarizers (such as 3M circular polarizing filter) are
highly effective at eliminating "wash out" caused by
ambient light reflected from the display.
A
circular polarizing filter modifies ambient light as
it passes through the filter and traps the mirror image
on reflection from the surface of the display. The signal
from the display is allowed to pass through the circular
polarizing filter and appears as a bright image against
a dark background.

A
3M circular polarizing filter is available in plastic
laminations of 0.25, 0.76, 1.83 and 3.3mm thickness.
Glass laminates are also available in various thickness
from 3.0mm.
Linear
Polarizing Filters
Linear
polarizing filters are widely used to block reflected
glare and improve visual acuity. Unpolarized light is
a mixture of vibrations lying in all directions transverse
to the line of travel. When this light passes through
a linear polarizer, its vibrations become confined to
a single linear plane and the light is considered polarizer.
This polarized light can be modified to suppress unwanted
reflections and to control glare in a variety of applications.
Retarders
Also known as wave plates, retarders are polarization form converters. It can be simply defined as an optical element which has two axes, slow and fast, that without appreciably altering the intensity or degree of polarization of an incident polarized beam, resolves the beam into two orthogonally polarized components (the component parallel to the slow axis lags the one parallel to the fast axis.) It then recombines the two components to form a single emerging beam of a specific polarization form. Wave plates are commonly used in conjunction with a linear polarizer to form a circular
polarizer. They can also be used in photo-elastic stress analysis.
