Optical Bonding is the process by which a protective clear cover is joined to a display--such as an LCD or touchscreen.

The adhesive eliminates the air gap, creating one continuous layer between the two materials. This continuous layer, besides sticking the cover to the display, can decrease reflections, improve clarity, and strengthen durability by providing an optically clear, absorbent bond holding the assembly together.

What is liquid adhesive?

Liquid adhesive, or wet bond, is a type of optically clear bond that’s often a popular choice in LCD assemblies. Being liquid, it has several benefits that dry film lamination (another option for bonding) lacks. Wet bond is frequently used to join materials with uneven surfaces, pre-applied graphics, or for bonding sensitive materials that might not be able to undergo the pressure or heat of a dry film lamination process. 

A wet bond is also extremely flexible and (being a liquid) can fill up the air gap in some assemblies more efficiently than a dry film. For example, displays with bezels are usually bonded with a liquid adhesive, since they would require a dry film of an exact depth. Instead of having to cut, shape, and perhaps even bond layers of film together in order to achieve the correct depth, the spreading liquid of the wet bond can fill up the gap fully and correctly, using a semi-automated dispensing process. 

Another common reason for picking a wet bond is the size of the display. A medium or large display with a sensitive component, like an LCD, would be tricky to dry film laminate, as the LCD itself would be unsupported in the middle and would flex under the force of the heated plate during a vacuum lamination.
